Christmas has always been an important time in Roger and Maria’s house. The decorations go up on 1st December and the family gather to celebrate. But dementia has changed things. ‘It is the unwelcome visitor,’ Maria says.
After Roger was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2023, he didn’t want to leave the house. Maria explains that the condition took away his energy and enthusiasm. At Christmas, Roger struggled to join in with the festivities like he used to.
Then they met Sam, their Dementia Adviser, who runs their local Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Café. ‘He’s my guidance,’ Maria explains. ‘I know I can talk to Sam privately if there are any changes or if it’s a really tough day. The emotional support and practical tips can be so helpful.’
With Sam’s encouragement, Maria has been able to find ways to make Christmas more manageable for Roger and keep him involved. ‘Whenever I see him joining in with the Christmas games, it makes me so happy,’ she says.
With the support of people like you this Christmas, Alzheimer’s Society can ensure that no one faces dementia alone. Helping people to avoid reaching crisis point, find strength amid the devastation and navigate some of their toughest moments.
It will take a society to beat dementia. Alzheimer's Society.
