Guidance: we advise you speak to a healthcare professional before buying medication management products and consider the following:
Recognition: a person with dementia will need to recognize the alarm and know how to respond
Learning: a person with dementia may need to learn new routines or be able to follow step by step instructions to use the dispenser.
Filling up: the dispenser will need to be kept topped up. This may be something a carer needs to do.
Battery life: someone will need to take responsibility for changing or charging the batteries.
Familiarity: it may be necessary for a carer to be on hand to check and reassure the user, particularly whilst they are getting used to the dispenser.
Monitoring: carers should be aware that although medication is missing from the dispenser it does not necessarily mean it has been taken.
Medication type: not all medication will be suitable for use with a dispenser. Check with your pharmacist that your medication can be used with a dispenser, and whether it can be fully removed from its packaging.
Time limit: as dementia progresses, users might not be able to use the dispenser in the same way. Please be aware of changes from the user’s side.
Instructions: for your own safety we strongly recommend that you read all the instructions carefully before using the dispenser.
