Ken supports Wendy at home all day, every day. ‘Wendy is my priority now. Everything else comes after her needs,’ he says.
Christmas had always been about gathering their family together, but dementia has changed things. Wendy and Ken can no longer take the lead over Christmas like they used to and have passed that role to their daughter.
Crucially, the support of their Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Adviser, Claire, is helping them to navigate Wendy’s condition. ‘Claire gives me confidence and reassurance and I feel a sense of relief when she visits,’ Ken says.
‘For us, at our age, online is no good. Claire is great because she is here in person. She understands the emotional side of things, which you just can’t do if you are not seeing someone face to face,’ Ken explains. ‘She really listens. I know I am not on my own.’
With the support of people like you this Christmas, we can ensure that no one faces dementia alone. Helping people to avoid reaching crisis point, find strength amid the devastation and navigate some of their toughest moments.
