Because of our work alongside families affected by dementia, we know that getting the right support at the right time can be life changing.

In 2024, just six days before Christmas, Yvonne was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. ‘When it began to sink in what it really meant, I was devastated,’ her husband Nigel recalls. ‘That Christmas, we spent it with family and we all cried. It felt traumatic. I’ll never forget it.’

Following Yvonne’s diagnosis, with symptoms starting to affect her daily life, the physical and mental toll of caring had a huge impact on Nigel. ‘I could be in the middle of a conversation and begin crying for no apparent reason,’ he says.

Then they met Vickie, a Dementia Adviser, who runs their local Alzheimer’s Society support groups. ‘Vickie’s sessions have helped me realise I can’t do everything on my own. They have given me confidence and have been instrumental in helping us adapt to this new life,’ Nigel says.

Yvonne agrees. ‘Our group is so supportive for both carers and the cared for. Vickie is a dream. She’s inventive, very motivational and has a wicked sense of humour.’

Thanks to the support of people like you this Christmas, Alzheimer’s Society can ensure that no one faces dementia alone.

It will take a society to beat dementia. Alzheimer's Society.
